Two Serious Games to Understand the Role of Statistics in R&D
Play to innovate! 2 collaborative games that make statistics in R&D fun and memorable.

Context

Statistics fuel discoveries, optimize resources and accelerate innovation…
  • Statistics plays a crucial role in R&D.
  • Many statistical tools can be implemented by non-statisticians.
  • Learning statistical methods often carries an austere connotation.

We decided to make it a fun activity!

The Approach: 2 Serious Collaborative Games

We offer two half-day workshops.

Each workshop takes the form of an escape room/treasure hunt, in which solving puzzles leads to the final reward while exploring a variety of concepts and situations.

Some puzzles are completed in small groups or even individually, while others involve the entire group.

  • Serious: While the learning process may be different, the objective of acquiring knowledge remains just as important as in traditional training.
  • Collaborative: Participants are encouraged to help each other achieve a common goal, which both strengthens team spirit and exposes all participants to issues encountered by their colleagues.

The different games and events follow the two common threads specific to this type of fun activity:

Why Take Part in These Collaborative Games?

We offer games rather than traditional training because they allow us to integrate concepts that are rarely explored in more traditional sessions. Our goal is to show participants that the statistical approach is, above all, an attitude. Participants have the opportunity to apply several key concepts while solving puzzles.

Therefore, the workshops make it possible to raise awareness among research teams of the role of statistics in the different stages of the research process while highlighting that good practices in this area are fairly easily achievable.

Cooperative play aims, as its name suggests, to encourage participants to collaborate to achieve predefined objectives. These objectives vary throughout each workshop and combine puzzles to solve, role-playing, and brain teasers, each addressing a concrete aspect in which statistical tools play a key role and provide effective solutions.t apportent des solutions efficaces.

Several Benefits Associated with Collaborative Games

  • Playful learning – Discover key statistical concepts through engaging challenges.
  • Improved memory – Thanks to a collaborative approach, you’ll more easily retain essential concepts.
  • Guaranteed innovation – Stimulate your creativity and improve your R&D skills.
  • For all levels – Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, our games adapt to your pace.

The 2 Games: DataQuest & InnovaSTAT

These two (2) half-day games are part of the start of our mentoring program, but can just as easily be offered independently. Their objective is to raise awareness among research teams of the role of statistics in the different stages of the research process while highlighting that good practices in this area are quite easily achieved. In order to eliminate the often austere connotation associated with statistical tools, we favored a serious cooperative game approach during which participants must collaborate in order to achieve a common goal.statistiques.

Each workshop covers a specific aspect of research activities according to the following sequence :

1. DataQuest – The management of Experiments & Collected Data

The art of creating a data file in accordance with the experimentation carried out while managing common problems during a scientific experiment.

Topics covered include:

  • Data management: coding, dictionary, structure
  • Missing data handling: coding, imputation, impacts
  • Dealing with outliers
  • Etc.

2. InnovaSTAT – Preparation of Research Protocols

The way of ensuring that upcoming experimentation achieves the objectives set by respecting the practical and financial constraints encountered.

Topics covered include the following issues and their implications:

  • Formulating the research question
  • Adequately representing variation
  • Pseudo-replication of experiments
  • Biological vs. statistical differences
  • The importance of sample size calculations
  • Multiplicity in statistical tests
  • Risk of bias
  • Etc.

Objectives

The main objectives of the games are as follows:

  • To familiarize participants with fundamental R&D issues related to statistical aspects by encouraging them to find appropriate solutions.
  • To demonstrate the importance of statistics in research while highlighting that many, if not most, of the approaches can be implemented by non-statisticians.
  • To use a fun approach to make a subject often considered austere more interesting.
  • To use transform statistical theory into operational reflexes, strengthen scientific rigour, and boost the credibility of your projects with investors and regulatory authorities.
  • To increase the methodological quality and robustness of your R&D projects from the earliest stages.
  • To promote collaboration between different stakeholders who usually only see one side of the issues addressed.

Prerequisite/Target Audience

These workshops to make participants aware of the added value to master statistical tools do not require any prior knowledge in this area.

Designed for R&D, clinical, regulatory or managerial teams, our games promote transversality, collective decision -making and the concrete appropriation of key statistical concepts.

One of the keys to success for these workshops is the participation of all the stakeholders involved in R&D, whether it be managers, researchers, technicians, clinicians, etc. First of all, they allow them to train to identify the methodological traps and to adopt a rigorous statistical approach. In addition, they provide participants with an opportunity to be made aware of the problems of a statistical nature commonly encountered by their colleagues.
